Shashank Manohar elected unopposed as independent ICC Chairman

"I look forward to working with all stakeholders to shape the future of cricket, which has a proud history and rich tradition," says Mr Manohar

President's post abolished as ICC's Full Council approves constitutional amendments

Mr Shashank Manohar has been elected by the Board unanimously and unopposed as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) following the ICC Full Council's approval of constitutional amendments proposed by the Board following its April meeting.

Mr Manohar, who on Tuesday resigned as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is the first elected independent Chairman of the game's governing body and will commence his two-year term with immediate effect.

According to the election process, ICC directors were each allowed to nominate one candidate, who had to be either a present or past ICC director. Nominees with the support of two or more Full Member directors would have been eligible to contest the election, which was scheduled to have been concluded by 23 May.

However, given that Mr Manohar was the sole nominee for the position and the Board has now unanimously supported his appointment, the independent Audit Committee Chairman, Mr Adnan Zaidi, who has been overseeing the election process, has declared the process complete, and Mr Manohar the successful candidate.

Mr Manohar is a prominent Indian lawyer who served his first stint as the BCCI President from 2008-2011. Following the passing of Mr Jagmohan Dalmiya, Mr Manohar was re-elected as the BCCI President in October 2015 and, by virtue of that position, has held the role of ICC Chairman since then.

Commenting on his election, Mr Manohar said: "It is an honour to be elected as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council and for that I am thankful to all the ICC directors who have put their faith and trust in my abilities. I also take this opportunity to thank all my colleagues in the BCCI who have supported me during my recent time as the BCCI's President.

"These are exciting times for international cricket as we are presently carrying out a comprehensive review of the 2014 constitutional amendments which is aimed at not only improving governance structures, but cricket structures as well. The ultimate objective is to grow our sport and engage a whole new generation of fans and I look forward to working with all stakeholders to shape the future of cricket, which has a proud history and rich tradition."

In order to accommodate the new position of an "independent" ICC Chairman, on Monday the Full Council unanimously approved various amendments to the ICC's constitution. The amendments also included the abolishment of the President's post with effect from the 2016 ICC Annual Conference in Edinburgh, which has become redundant.

Dhoni files defamation case against Hindi daily for match-fixing allegations

MS Dhoni, reportedly, has sued the publishers of Hindi Daily Sun Star for damages up to Rs 100 crores on account of defamation, trauma, and mental agony.

A sting operation done by Sun Star accused the Indian captain MS Dhoni of fixing the Manchester Test match during India’s tour to England in 2014.

Sun Star quoted Sunil Dev, who was a manager of the Indian team on England tour in 2014, alleged that the Indian captain had fixed a Test match and had purposely chosen to bat on a wet wicket, in spite of deciding in a team meeting that India would choose to field first, should the toss be won. The Test match was lost by India in under three days by an innings and 54 runs.

Sunil Dev, the former DDCA secretary, however, rubbished allegations of accusing Indian limited-overs captain after the news came out.

Reacting to the report, Dhoni’s Delhi-based lawyers C&C Associates have sent a nine-page legal notice.

“The said video contains footage of an absolute dubious sting operation of the aforementioned Sunil Dev, which in the present circumstances is nothing but a false propaganda initiated by you to defame my client”, the notice says.

“In fact, the so called Indian cricket official (Sunil Dev) who you have credited to be the source of information has strongly denied the incident.” Dhoni’s lawyers (Rajneesh Chopra and Pratik Malik) have asked the publishers to issue denials to the report in the next 48-hours or face a legal case against them.”

“Our client (Dhoni) reserves the right to institute proceedings for the recovery of damages up to Rs 100 Crores from you on account of the defamation, mental agony and trauma caused to him due to this by causing loss of his reputation,”  the notice continues.

IPL 2016 : Dhoni led Pune franchise named as Rising Pune Super Giants

Kolkata-based RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group has renamed its IPL Pune franchisee as Rising Pune Super Giants, in sync with its branding pursuit. On Monday, the group said that the abbreviated name is the same as group's name: RP-SG.

From Day One, we had indicated that our entry in the sports vertical will be for branding purpose.
- group chairman, Sanjiv Goenka said.
Apart from making sure to reflect the abbreviated group's name on its franchisee, the logo of the IPL cricket team also features part of the business group's logo and is designed using the corporate group's colours. The players' shirts may also use the same hues as the RP-SG group.
The team has narrowed in on former Indian cricket team skipper M S Dhoni as its captain for the 2016 season of the IPL. Dhoni was earlier captain of the successful Chennai Super Kings, whose promoters were barred from the franchise after the Justice Lodha committee found them guilty of match-fixing. An earlier IPL team Pune Warriors, owned by Sahara India, was disenfranchised from the IPL by the BCCI after it defaulted on bank guarantees following a meltdown in the promoter company's finances.

Additionally, former Rajasthan Royals' senior official Raghu Iyer has been brought in as the CEO of the RP-SG group's sports vertical; the team will bid for players in the February 6 auction later this year.
Hinting at an entry into other sports as well, Goenka said,

We'll be more aggressive in the sports vertical in the coming days.
Initially, the company's decision to enter into sports hadn't gone down well with its shareholders as CESC shares took a beating after Goenka decided to buy a stake in the Pune IPL team.
However, Goenka said the decision would not reflect on its publicly listed companies.
"No losses from cricket will get reflected in the shares of our public listed companies", he said.
The market had perceived that the group's entry into the sports vertical might affect the bottom line of CESC, the RPSG group flagship company. The Pune franchisee is owned by New Rising, a subsidiary of CESC.

Film on MS Dhoni to release in 2015 - Poster Tweeted by Sakshi

A biopic on Indian captain MS Dhoni is set to release next year, the poster of which was shared by Dhoni's wife Sakshi today on Twitter.

Sakshi tweeted the movie poster and wrote, "Clearing out all those rumours being carried out past few days.It was all false.. Here you go ....BOOM !!!."

The name of the movie is "MS Dhoni - The Untold Story". According to the poster, Sushant Singh Rajput will play the role of Indian skipper and the biopic will be directed by Neeraj Pandey.

Earlier this month, there were reports that Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had stopped the movie stating that it cannot be released till Dhoni retires from the game. "MSD has no choice but to comply," an unnamed friend of Dhoni was quoted by "Mumbai Mirror" when asked about BCCI stopping the film.

"To begin with, it was not a commercially viable project because a sports drama, even on a game as popular as cricket, has a niche audience. But the real roadblock came from BCCI. If we do go ahead with the film it will only happen after MSD's career on the field has come to an end," added the friend.

Now, questions will be raised whether Dhoni is retiring in 2015? or BCCI has given the green signal for the movie to hit the screens next year.
