Socceroos to wear special shirts for flood victims

The Socceroos will wear special shirts during their warm-up for Friday's Asian Cup clash with Korea Republic and black armbands in the match, to raise awareness of the devastating floods in Queensland.
The shirts will read 'Australia Flood Relief Appeal - Donate now' and feature a link to the appeal website, Australian captain Lucas Neill said.
"Thanks to the Asian Football Confederation, who have gracefully allowed us to wear a different shirt in the warm-up, highlighting where you can donate to an appeal," said  Neill.
"It's a massive disaster. Australian people have unfortunately died and people are missing. The floods are never-ending, people are losing their houses and it is a concern of the Socceroos team.
"Our thoughts and wishes are with the people back home and we hope we can do them proud over here."
Queensland state capital Brisbane, Australia's third-largest city, was turned into a disaster zone on Thursday, with whole suburbs under water and infrastructure smashed as the worst flood in decades hit 30,000 properties.
At least 15 people have been killed.
"This is not just for people in Australia, hopefully people all over the world can realise that sometimes football is not the biggest thing in the world and people's lives are more important,” continued Neill.
"People losing their families and their homes ... it makes football seem second best."
At least five members of the Socceroo squad were either born or raised in Queensland.
"We will be wearing black armbands for the people who have lost their lives," Neill added.

Saudi record dented again

This is only the second time Saudi Arabia’s proud and glittering record in the AFC Asian Cup has been dented with a humiliating group stage exit.

Since the Sons of the Desert’s first participation in the continental showcase in 1984, the West Asians have featured in the final without fail, save in 2004 and this edition.

They lifted the cup by beating China in their debut appearance in 1984 and kept it under lock and key by winning it again four years later after edging Korea Republic on penalties.

In 1992 they reached the final but lost to Japan by a solitary goal but came back with vigour to win the title for the third time in 1996, defeating the UAE on penalties.

In the year 2000, they lost to their great rivals Japan but it was in 2004 that their campaign ended in a shocking manner in the group stage. In China, they drew 2-2 with Turkmenistan, lost to Uzbekistan 1-0, and a 2-1 defeat to Iraq completed their rout. They ended with just one point at the rear of the table.

Four years later the Saudis were unstoppable or so it seemed until Iraq took the wind out of them in Jakarta. They lost 1-0 in the memorable final at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, a crushing defeat out of which it seems the team is still finding its way out.
