Saudi record dented again

This is only the second time Saudi Arabia’s proud and glittering record in the AFC Asian Cup has been dented with a humiliating group stage exit.

Since the Sons of the Desert’s first participation in the continental showcase in 1984, the West Asians have featured in the final without fail, save in 2004 and this edition.

They lifted the cup by beating China in their debut appearance in 1984 and kept it under lock and key by winning it again four years later after edging Korea Republic on penalties.

In 1992 they reached the final but lost to Japan by a solitary goal but came back with vigour to win the title for the third time in 1996, defeating the UAE on penalties.

In the year 2000, they lost to their great rivals Japan but it was in 2004 that their campaign ended in a shocking manner in the group stage. In China, they drew 2-2 with Turkmenistan, lost to Uzbekistan 1-0, and a 2-1 defeat to Iraq completed their rout. They ended with just one point at the rear of the table.

Four years later the Saudis were unstoppable or so it seemed until Iraq took the wind out of them in Jakarta. They lost 1-0 in the memorable final at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, a crushing defeat out of which it seems the team is still finding its way out.

Fabio blow for Qatar reveals Metsu

Qatar have been dealt a huge blow ahead of their crucial AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2011™ A game with China at Khalifa Stadium on Wednesday with the news that Fabio Cesar has been ruled out with injury.

Fabio Cesar

Boss Bruno Metsu confirmed the influential midfielder has been ruled out of the clash and is likely to force the Frenchman into a tactical reshuffle with the absence of arguably their best player representing a serious setback to the hosts' chances of reviving their bid to reach the last eight following the opening defeat to Uzbekistan.

“Fabio is injured so he won't play,” confirmed Metsu .

“There might be some changes in the formation of my team.”

The loss to Uzbekistan has left Qatar in the precarious position of effectively needing three points against the East Asians on Wednesday to maintain their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals ahead of the final game against Qatar.

That will be no easy feat given China's performance in their opening 2-0 victory over Kuwait and Metsu is under no illusions about the extent of the task that faces his players.

“We are waiting for a very important match,” he said.

“Now we are in a situation where it is unthinkable for us to lose. We have to win.

“This is a very important and decisive match and different from the first match. We have to win. We know the Chinese team are very distinguished and organised and it is difficult for us to change their rhythm but we will use every possible avenue to win this game.”

The pressure has been building on Metsu and Qatar since the disappointment of last Friday but the former UAE coach insists it is something they will have to cope with as hosts of Asia's most prestigious tournament.

“The pressure is always there but this time it will be different,” he said.

“Last time it was because it was the opening game but on Wednesday it will be connected to the result. We know that we only have one choice and that is to win.

“When we talk about emotion, it does not go along with normal thinking and I'm sure the fans are standing by us and supporting us.

“I understand the disappointment of the fans and we will try to satisfy their expectations in the match against China.

“The most important thing is the spirit and mentality of the team.”
